One of the first things that you will need to do is to begin to develop the skill of paying attention to things. Your surroundings and your body are two of the most important things to pay attention to.
Many people have not developed this skill because we take for granted that someone else will do it for us. Someone will protect us. Someone will tell us the weather. Someone will tell us what is wrong with our bodies, etc, etc, etc.
As in many areas of life we have given over our responsibilities to someone else and they are not nearly as capable as we are to do the job in many cases. Let's face it, others don't care about us as much as we care about ourselves usually.
The two areas mentioned above, our surroundings and our bodies are two areas that can have a huge impact on whether we live or die in some situations. So developing the skill of paying attention is extremely important.
Your head should always be on a swivel especially when you are in unfamiliar territory. You should actually SEE the things around you, don't just observe them. Make a game out of it, try to notice what someone is wearing, what colors, styles. Glance fairly quickly then turn away and try to remember. Then look back and see how accurate you were. With practice you will become much better at the details.
When it comes to your body and paying attention to it, there can be tremendous benefits to you. As an example, I recently woke up with a feeling in my throat, I can't really describe it but it was just different than normal. I knew because of paying attention that I was feeling the beginnings of some type of sickness. A cold, flu, sinus infection, something. I immediately began my regimen of prevention (I'll list the steps in detail in a separate post) and was able to almost completely stop it in it's track before it took hold. More times than not I am successful although those times are few and far between thankfully. I have very few colds because I try to pay attention and maintain a good immune system. We'll discuss that later too.
So, start today making some mental changes. Initially you will physically have to think about these things but after a while they will become second nature and you will find yourself doing it automatically.
These are just some very basic suggestions but you have to start somewhere.
